Free Desktop Icons
It is a fact. Over the past few years, desktop icons have gotten much snazzier than ever before because of advances in operating systems which have made them the flashiest yet. I remember the old days well. In those days, desktop icons were so plain and boring it is hard to even talk about. They were all low resolution, boxy pictures that were meant to represent various extremely simple objects, objects which they did not at all resemble. For example, your mouse cursor desktop icon would resemble some kind of low-resolution arrow. If it was loading, it would blink on and off, otherwise it would be static. And that was it. None of the other desktop icons was that much prettier, and there was little choice in customizing them. On old macs, the loading desktop icons were supposed to look like a computer thinking, if my memory serves me correctly (which it does not always do), but they barely resembled a sort of amorphous box flashing on and off in ugly gray and white. Hideous – hideous all around.
Now, thanks to the efforts of the big software companies, all the new power of the latest generation of computers can be channeled towards what it was designed for: making your desktop look new and snazzy. Todays computers have more memory for brilliant, full-color background photos, desktop animations, and multi-frame, moving desktop icons than ever before. And, as always you can find them on all sorts of themes if you just do a simple Google search. For example, there are desktop icons on almost every television show known to man, often packaged as part of comprehensive desktop themes. If you have watched and fallen in love with some obscure, 1980's British cartoon, chances are someone else has too. And if you are lucky, that someone else is someone with nothing better to do than sit around all day making nifty desktop icons, and capturing old sound clips and images from the show, all for your entertainment.
If you also have lots of time on your hands (and who doesn't these days), you can try your hand at creating your own desktop icons. It is easy to do them simply, but to make really good desktop icons is less of a science than an art. Why, there are even desktop icons so snazzy that people are willing to pay big bucks just to put them on their computers.
